Tools to gather information

How can we gather the information concerning needs of parents:

I. Structured questionnaire (for parents, other bodies)

Here there are the conclusions about the principal needs of the parents, in the opinion of the most of participants:

1. Information (about the child's disability)

    - medical : recover systems/programs, prognostic, what the child can and can't do - somatic and mental)

    - psychological problems (agressivity, behavioral disorders)

    - legislation (rights)

2. Training

    - Facing the stress (firstly to recognize the problems, to accept them and to deal)

    - How to behave and how to not behave with the child (link with the school)

        -- education

        -- how to deal with the agressiveness of the children

    - How to handle with child behavior

    - Free time and leisure

    - Encounter with other families with similary problems

    - How to use equipments

3. Mediation : counsellor, teacher, social workers, medical staff

4. Therapy

    A. Individual (cognitive-behavioral, family therapy, ludic therapy, art-therapy)

    B. Group Therapy

5. Support:

    - psychological + counselling

    - financial (information about governmental and non-governmental support)

    - respite care (information about carrers)

6. Facilities / equipment for children (the parents have to ask to/adressed to: social services providers, health local system, schools, parents'associations)

II. Interview with open questions (parents, other bodies)

III. Group discussion (parents)

IV. Statistic enquiry : to know what services/help are required and which are mostly used (agencies, observatories)

Exchange of information

Decisions for future activity

            1. One of the  Italian partners, C.O.O.S.S., have proposed the next meeting in March to be held in Ancona (Italy) instead in Marinha Grande (Portugal), the number of days and participants being those aproved in the project by National Agencies. Consequently, the third meeting will be in June in Marinha Grande (Portugal). The reason is to give the possibility of partners to attend a half day conference “Daily Center: laboratory of research and animation”, a subject presenting an  especially interest for all the partners in this project.

All the partners will ask for the approval from their National Agencies.

2. The details of the implementation plan for the next period were defined more accurately:

1.02.2002 - 17.03.2002  – each partner develops a tool for the analysis of the parent’s needs (based on the common frame established during this meeting)

18.03.2002 – 24.03.2002 – the second  visit in Ancona with the following agenda:

-                                presentation of the tool proposed by each partner for the analysis of the parents’need

-                                comparison of several tools and elaboration of a common tool

-                                definition of the modalities for the submission of the tool in each country

-                                meetings between visiting staff and host organization members

-                                meeting with professionals who work with parents of children with disabilities, with parents and beneficiaries

-                                attending the conference

24.03.2002 – middle of June 2002

-                                implementing the tool of assesement of parents’ needs in each country

-                                the development of a national report presenting the results 

6 days in the middle of June – the third visit in Marinha Grande (Portugal)

-                                discussion of national reports presenting the needs of parents having in view the development of a  comparative study

-                                meetings between visiting staff and host organization members

-                                meeting with professionals who work with parents of children with disabilities, with parents and beneficiaries

-                                demonstrations of an possible educational approach for the situations encountered

  Middle of June - 31.07.2002

-                                development of a draft of the comparative study concerning the parents’needs (coordinator’s responsibility)

-                                development of the anual report (each partner)

 

 

General evaluation of the meeting

Each partner organization has received an meeting evaluation form to fill in. The main items has reffered to : how useful was this meeting, how new were the subjects discussed, how useful it will be this meeting for the development of the project, the meeting atmosphere, facilities etc. The general estimation of the meeting was between satisfactory and good.
